Michael Dick

Michael Dick is experienced in both photography and firefighting. In addition to photographing firefighters on the job long before it became popular, he was also a firefighter when he served in the United States Air Force. Having hands-on experience in both fields gave him a unique perspective when he first began documenting the FDNY in action.

His primary professional focus was nature photography, but he could never resist taking his camera to a working fire. The common element in these two types of photography is that they are both spontaneous and unpredictable. They both present the challenge of anticipating what’s going to happen next and being ready for it.

Mike’s nature photographs have been shown worldwide in many major publications including National Geographic and Smithsonian and used by Microsoft, Y&R, Glencoe/McGraw Hill, and Houghton Mifflin, to name a few. They have also been used to promote wildlife conservation and the environment by the World Wildlife Fund and the New York Zoological Society.
