More than just a book about being a probie

Posted by Tyler Vickers on Mar 25th 2026

Just finished the book and felt compelled to come leave a review while the ending is still fresh in my head. O’Donnell had the gift of bringing you into her world with her words on paper. She makes you the shotgun rider in the front seat of every trial and tribulation faced through stars of her life and young career as a firefighter. As someone who is on the job, it truly did bring me back to a lot of the things I experience when I was in her shoes. 10/10 must read.

Nichole writes from the heart. Her book is humorous, humble, hopeful, and heartbreaking. If you’re a probie, know a probie, or work with probies, get this book. A rare glimpse into the life of someone relatively new in the fire service.

Must have book for rookie and aspiring firefighters

Posted by Nate Arnold on Mar 6th 2026

Just finished this book. Excellent. Nichole lays a road map for young members of the fire service to follow. Her writing is encouraging and positive while also using moments early in her career as teaching points to show probies that mistakes will be made and the important thing is to own them and not run from or hide them. The book is a quick, good read but the last chapter is a revelation that gives the reader more encouragement to push through their own setbacks and turn them into their own strengths.

Another life changed by the greatest job on earth!

FF O’Donnell has (figuratively) made me travel back to my rookie year in the service and reminded me that it costs $0 to have a great work ethic, a positive attitude and a be teachable. Finish to the very end and you’ll see how her life challenges create the perfect opportunity to serve others in her capacity as Private O’Donnell, The Massachusetts Firefighter you want showing up to your emergency!
