Ron Kanterman

Ron Kanterman is currently a career fire chief in Fairfield County, Connecticut. He entered the fire service in 1975 in Brooklyn, New York, and then took a position in 1989 as the assistant chief and later the chief of fire protection for a Fortune 100 pharmaceutical company until 2008. He then served as Fire Chief and Fire Marshal for a Native American Tribal Nation prior to going to his current command.
He holds a BA in fire service administration and an MS in fire protection management, both from John Jay College in New York City. He holds a second master’s degree in environmental sciences from the New Jersey Institute of Technology. Chief Kanterman is an adjunct professor of fire protection and emergency management for various two- and four-year colleges and teaches at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
He holds memberships with numerous national, state, and local organizations and is the administrator for the National Fire Academy Alumni Association. He also teaches as an adjunct instructor for the National Fire Academy.
He has been published over 150 times and contributes to Fireengineering.com regularly through their blog page under “Chief Kanterman’s Journal.” He was a contributing chapter author for the Fire Engineering/Pennwell Firefighter I & II manual published in 2008 and the 7th edition of the Fire Chief’s Handbook published in 2015. He also serves on the Educational Advisory Committee for the Fire Department Instructor’s Conference (FDIC) where he has taught workshops and classes for the past 20 years.
Chief Kanterman is an avid volunteer with the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation and works as the Incident Commander each year at the National Memorial Weekend in Emmitsburg, Maryland. He is also an advocate for the Firefighter Cancer Support Network and is the lead instructor for the NFFF Local Assistance State Team (LAST) program.
