John M. Eversole

John M. Eversole, is Chief of Special Functions (ret.) for the Chicago Fire Department. He has a Bachelor’s Degree in Management from Lewis University. Chief Eversole joined the Chicago Fire Department in February of 1969 and has served on engine companies, hook and ladder Companies, and squad companies. He is also a certified Master Instructor through the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal. He is an instructor teaching Fire Science programs for the Chicago City Wide Colleges and the University of Illinois.

Chief Eversole has been involved in a number of special programs such as the Deep Tunnel Project and the Hazardous Incident Team. He has coordinated the development of the Confined Space/Collapse Rescue operations and has also been working with the U.S. Department of Defense in developing a civilian emergency response program for terrorism.



Chief Eversole is recently retired as the Chief of Special Functions. Under his command, he was responsible for Hazardous Materials, Technical Rescue, Specialty Apparatus, Air Sea Rescue, and the Office of Fire Investigation. Chief Eversole is the Chairman of the Hazardous Material Committee of the IAFC and is also the Chairman of the Hazardous Materials Professional Competency Standards Committee of the NFPA. He serves as a member of the InterAgency Board for Equipment Standardization and InterOperability. He has also served on several technical committees for IFSTA. He served on the Firefighter Safety Act Panel of the U.S. Fire Administration, which resulted from the tragic Kansas City explosion. He also served as a member of America Burning Recommissioned.
