Limited staffing is never ideal, but it is a reality for much of the fire service. When faced with limited staffing on the fireground, it is crucial to understand the tactics that are available to you and how to keep your firefighters safe when implementing those tactics.
In this live presentation, Chief John Buckman III walks us through his operational checklist and size-up. Buckman discusses being outgunned on the fireground and the important role of command during these incidents.
It’s important to understand the limitations as well as the tactics that these situations call for.

John M. Buckman III is a former fire chief, national organization leader, author, trainer, and professional photographer. He is the director of government and regional outreach for IamResponding.com and the education coordinator for the Volunteer and Combination Officers Section. He has published eight books, authored more than 200 articles, and presented programs in all 50 states, each province of Canada, the Dominican Republic, and Beijing, China.
He served as president of the International Association of Fire Chiefs from 2001–2002 and cofounded the Volunteer and Combination Officers Section of the National Fire Academy Alumni Association.
